Hjørring Internationals - An International Network

Would you like to meet new people and expand your social network in Denmark?

Hjørring International is a social network for expats and internationally minded Danes who live in and around the Hjørring area.

Hjørring Internationals is a unique and fun opportunity for newcomers to Hjørring to make friends and build up a network which will help you settle and feel at home.

The network meets on a regular basis for different activities, some during the day and some in the evening.

Everyone is welcome to join the network; Whether you are working, looking for work or studying, whether you have a family or you are single, whether you are young or old, whether you speak Danish or not, whether you are here for three months, three years or 30 years – everyone is welcome.

Danes wanting to meet foreign cultures and make friends with internationals are also very welcome to join.

The events within Hjørring Internationals are arranged by Hjørring Municipality.

The network has a very active Facebook group 'Hjørring Internationals'. Invitations for networking events are published in this group and you are more than welcome to post your own events in the group. In addition, representatives from Hjørring Municipality post daily updates with information, that you might find interesting as an international in Denmark. If you are looking for advice from your fellow internationals you are also be able to post these questions in the group.

Cafe Spouse - An International Network for Spouses and Partners

Did you accompany your spouse/partner to Denmark?

As an accompanying international spouse you have come to Denmark because your spouse / partner has either got a job here or is searching for one.

But what about you?
Maybe you are also pursuing a career in Denmark?
Maybe you have questions about life in North Denmark?
Maybe you are interested in meeting others and building a network?

Join Café Spouse.
‘Café Spouse’ is an initiative by Jobcenter Hjørring that aims at helping accompanying spouses / partners of international employees in the Hjørring area settle down in the area and achieve an everyday life in Denmark that meets their requirements.

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month to an informal networking event. Each event has a certain theme, e.g. job search, Danish Culture, Volunteer work etc. Representatives from the Jobcenter will be present at each meeting to help you with your questions about life in Denmark. In addition, we will have guest speakers at the meetings.

Networking with Rotary Hirtshals

Hjørring Municipality and the Rotary Club in Hirtshals work together in helping internationals settle down in Hjørring Municipality.

The Rotary Club in Hirtshals and Hjørring Municipality arrange network-events for internationals (expats and their accompanying families) and internationally minded Danes.

By joining the networking events you will get the chance of meeting new people and build up a social network, that will help you settle and feel at home.

Every networking event will have a special theme that will provide you with knowledge of the Danish society, e.g. Public Transportation in North Denmark, Renting or buying houses, the Danish Health Care System etc. You therefore get a unique opportunity to achieve new knowledge of the Danish Society – and find answers to many of the questions that may arise, when you are new in Denmark.

Sports and Exercise

If you (or your children) want to do sports or exercise together with others, you/they can become a member of a sport club.

Almost all types of sports are represented in the municipality’s kaleidoscope of sports and leisure activities. In the Municipality of Hjørring there are no less than sixteen sports centres, six tennis clubs, five golf courses, one badminton centre and five swimming pools. Hjørring is characterised especially by its broad base of amateur sports. Sports such as football, handball, tennis, badminton, swimming, fitness and gymnastics are very popular. 

Many children and young people do different kinds of sport in their spare time. It is common for parents to support their children, for example, by paying their membership fees, ferrying the children to and from their activities and by participating

Nearly all forms of formalised exercise and sport are run by associations or organisations that people can join. You have to pay to become a member, but in some cases the municipal authority will contribute towards the cost so that the fee remains low.

DGI (A nationwide sports organization) has a website, where you can look for a certain sports club in your local area. On the website Here you can put down your zipcode under "Hvor" (where) and the sport of your interest under "Hvad" (what), and then the website will provide you with different options. If you enjoy Wellness, we recommend that you visit ‘Vandhuset Park Vendia’. It has a large swimming pool and a wellness section, where you can indulge yourself and find inner peace and strength. You can also enjoy a swim in the large 50 metre basin with 8 lanes. Vandhuset Park Vendia has a fun area with a 60 metre long water slide, where children can play and includes a basin with 30 degree C warm water plus steam bath and sauna.

Outdoor Activities

If you love the outdoor life, Hjørring Municipality has a lot to offer you.

Hjørring Municipality is characterised by a beautiful landscape and a vigorous nature. In the Spring everything turns green and nature sets the scene for a pleasent picnic. In the Summer you can enjoy the warm summerdays on one of the many wide sand beaches. When Autumn comes, the hunt for natural treasures like mushrooms and berries begins. In the Winter it is time to enjoy the snow and a wonderful toboggan ride in the hilly landscape.

The options for doing outdoors sports are plenty. Why not go hiking in Slotved Skov, near Sindal, where you can observe the flocks of fallow deer? Or if you like mountain biking, try the MTB tracks in the many different woods or dune plantation. On the beaches you can go surfing, play beach volley and beach soccer – or just take a nice walk in the shallows. If you are in to fishing, you can fish from the piers, the beaches or take a boat out to go sea fishing. Another option is to rent a canoe and take a trip down the small river Uggerby Å? And for golfers we have a large selection of golf courses of a very high quality. Winter swimming is popular – and you can join the local winter swimming club in Hirtshals every morning during the year.

As you can tell, the possibilities of being active indoor or outdoor are excessive in Hjørring Municipality.

Culture

Hjørring and the smaller towns around are characterized by life all year round.

Throughout the year there are a host of exciting events. No matter if you like revue, theatre, films, concerts, galleries or workshops you can find it in Hjørring. Below we have listed some of the many experiences. We also recommend you  to have a look at www.visithjoerring.dk for further information.

Vendsyssel Theatre is a small and dynamic regional theatre in Hjørring. The theatre provides four student productions during the season, plus a number of guest performances and themed events.

Hjørring Theatre is a beautiful old theatre from 1907. It provides about 30-40 performances annually.

Hjørring Biocenter is the largest cinema in Vendsyssel and presents movies for the entire family. The foreign movies are shown in their original language with Danish subtitles.

In the center of Hjørring you will find historical pearls like three Middle Age Churches and Vendsyssels Historiske museum which is the historical museum of Hjørring with exhibition about prehistoric times.

At Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum you can experience modern Danish art and on P. Nørkjærs Plads you will find a sculptural collection of the artist Bjørn Nørgaard.

In the town of Lønstrup you will find a wide selection of exciting galleries and other forms of arts and crafts, e.g. Glass blowers, pottery, textile art, jewellery artists and stone sculptors.

There are a number of different scout organizations in Hjørring Municipaliy.

There are scout organizations for boys, girls and adults. They offer a variety of activities are a great way to meet new people and get involved in the community.

Music

Interested in Music? Playing yourself or listening?

Hjørring Municipality offers different options for you and your family to practice your musical skills. Below we list some of these options. Most websites in Danish only.

Music Lessons:

'Hjørring Musiske Skole' offers music lessons at all levels for both children and adults. The school offers lessons in many different instruments within all musical genres. You are normally taught individually (25 minutes pr. Lesson).

Listening to music:

In Hjørring there are various options for going out and listening to music. At www.kulturnaut.dk you are able to find a list of upcoming events in Hjørring and North Denmark.

The different cafés and bars in Hjørring also present live music from time to time.

Hjørring Libraries

All Danish municipalities have public libraries, where you can borrow books, CDs and videos and use the Internet free of charge.

Traditionally we think of a library as a place where you can borrow books. The libraries in Denmark, however, offer a range of other services for you and your family…

Did you know that it is possible to borrow music, films, Danish language materials and journals and magazines in many different languages at the library? Or did you know that the Library offers free access to the Internet by Wifi or by using one of the PC’s in the Library?

And did you know that the Library has a kids’ area, offering picture books, access to PC’s and playing opportunities, where you and you children can have a nice time? Or that it is possible to use the Library as a meeting point, where you can meet with others to read/discuss literature?

The Libraries in Hjørring is therefore much more than just books…

Try visiting your local Library and:

  • Have a nicetime with you children in the kids' area offering picturebooks, access to PC’s, playing opportunities and much more.
  • Free access to the Internet by Wifi or by using one of the PC’s in the Library.
  • Enjoy a cup of coffee or something to eat at 'Café lige efter bogen', the main library's cosy café
  • Get free access to online movies, music, games and newspapers. 
  • Borrow books, movies and games in many different languages.

Café Chat - Language Café

Café Chat is a free language café for anybody who wants to meet new people and have a chat about everyday things - in Danish!

The café takes place every Wednesday from 15:00 - 16:00 at Hjørring Library (Upstairs at the Metropol Shopping Center, Østergade 30,1, Hjørring).

No need to sign up - just turn up. The language café is mostly for adults, but children can play in the children's library.
